Srinagar: Safina Baig, an independent candidate, who won the district development council (DDC) election from Wagoora constituency in north Kashmir will head the District Development Council Baramulla.
Baig, the wife of former PDP patron Muzaffar Hussain Baig, won the election for the post of chairperson of the 14-member DDC Baramulla by receiving ten votes while as a People’s Conference candidate Sonaullah Parray was elected as vice-chairperson after draw of lots following a tie.
Baig was supported by PC, Apni Party, and a candidate from the Congress party, sources said.
The election for the post of chairperson and vice-chairperson of DDC Baramulla was deferred on February 8 after some of the candidates didn’t turn up for the voting. However, after deputy commissioner Baramulla Aijaz Asad issued warning and strictures, all the 14 DDC members participated in the election process today.
Muzaffar Baig, who is a founding member of the PDP, resigned from the party after Safina was denied a ticket by the PAGD for the Wagoora DDC constituency.
The PAGD allotted Wagoora constituency to National Conference and a close aide of Basharat Bukhari contested from it and lost badly.
NC reportedly surrendered four seats on the insistence of Basharat Bukhari. He has been rebuked by the NC leaders for his poor performance and has not been invited to the party meetings.
Sources in National Conference say it is a matter of time now when Bukhari will be expelled from the party for his anti-party activities and reports emerging of his joining the Apni Party.
