Srinagar Jan 2: At least 13 students have tested positive for the Covid-19 at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University in Katra, forcing the authorities to close the institution.

The Chief Medical Officer Reasi has intimated to the government that during the CoVID testing at the SMVD University on December 31 and Jan 1, a total of 13 students have tested positive for the CoVID.

“It has been found expedient to close the SMVD University to contain the spread of the disease and ensure the safety of the students and general public,” said Deputy Commissioner Reasi, Charandeep Singh, calling for immediate closure of the university till further orders.

In September, the SMVD had started offline classes by adhering to the CoVID protocol.

Jammu and Kashmir reported two deaths and 169 fresh Covid infections on Saturday, an official health bulletin said.

Of the total cases, two deaths and 101 cases were reported in Kashmir while the Jammu division saw 68 infections.

The highest 48 cases were reported in Srinagar followed by 34 cases in Jammu and 15 in Baramulla. As many as 13 districts saw single-digit or zero cases.

Srinagar district has the highest number of active cases at 448 followed by Jammu with 298  cases.

The number of active cases is 1,397 while the total cases in J&K have mounted to 3,41,459 and the death toll stands at 4,530.
