Srinagar, Janata Dal United President for Jammu and Kashmir G.M Shaheen Monday said holding elections in Jammu and Kashmir without getting statehood won’t serve any purpose.
He said it is important that Jammu and Kashmir be given the statehood and only after that, elections should be conducted. “In a union territory elected public representatives have no say and they don’t exercise any authority. Conducting elections in Jammu and Kashmir without statehood will be a futile exercise and wastage of time for the voters,” Shaheen said.
He told that politicians in J&K should press for the demand of restoration of statehood rather than laying emphasis on holding elections.
“Even if elections will be held and people choose their representatives, they won’t have any power. In a Union Territory, key departments are supervised by New Delhi while a Chief Minister will enjoy the power lesser than the mayor of a city,” he said. (KNT)
