An Al-Qaeda militant was arrested in Ramban area of Jammu and Kashmir, Police said on Monday.
Amiruddin Khan son of Mostafa Khan of Mashita Haora in West Bengal was arrested by a police party along the Jammu-Srinagar national highway, police said.
Police said Khan was an Al-Qaeda operative and a grenade was recovered from him.
Police have filed a case under various sections of the Indian Arms Act, and the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act against Khan.
In September, two militants of Ansar Ghazwatul Hind, an al-Qaeda affiliate, were shot dead in a “chance encounter” with security forces in the Anantnag district.
Fayaz Kumar and Owais Khan, both local militants, were involved in several attacks, police said.
On July 31, al-Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahiri was killed in a United States drone strike in Kabul, Afghanistan.
In April, al-Zawahiri released a video, calling Indian Muslims to oppose the Hijab ban by the Karnataka government.
Al-Qaeda has long called for jihad to liberate Kashmir and other Islamic lands from the “enemies of Islam” and has from time to time focused on India. As early as 1996, for example, Osama bin Laden released a statement calling for the liberation of Kashmir and Assam.
In 2014, al-Zawahiri launched al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS).
