Srinagar: Two among 15 police personnel injured in a militant attack on Srinagar-Jammu highway near Zewan succumbed to wounds at a hospital here, officials said on Monday.
A bus of police’s armed forces was fired upon near Aripora Zewan in the outskirts of Srinagar on the Srinagar-Jammu highway on Monday afternoon.
“Among the injured police personnel, 01 ASI & a Selection Grade Constable #succumbed to their injuries & attained #martyrdom,” Kashmir Police tweeted.
Sources say militants fired indiscriminately at the vehicle of the 9th battalion of the Indian Reserve Police (IRP) at Zewan area of Srinagar in which 16 policemen sustained injuries.
“All the injured fifteen cops were referred to Army’s 92 base hospital at Badamibagh for treatment,” they said.
The two slain have been identified as Assistant Sub Inspector Ghulam Hassan and senior constable Safique Ali who succumbed to their injuries at a hospital here.
Injured have been identified as Sajad Ahmad, Rameez Ahmad, Bishamber Kumar, Sanjay Kumar, Vikas Sharma, Abdul Majeed, Mudassir Ahmad, Ravi Kanth, Showkat Ali, Arshid Ahmad, Satveer Sharma, Liaqat Ali and Aadil Ali, all are constables of 9th Battalion of Jammu and Kashmir armed police.
Until the last reports came in searches were going on in the area. However, there were no immediate reports about arrests of any person so far.
Earlier in the day security forces claimed to have killed two Lashkar-e-Toiba militants in a shootout at Rangreth locality in Srinagar.
