Sculpture handed over to Department of Archives, Archaology, Museums: Police
Budgam Police Tuesday recovered an ancient sculpture of Hindu Goddess Durga from Khag area of Central Kashmir’s Budgam district on Tuesday.
This is the second sculpture that police have recovered in the district in the past three months.
Officials told that the sculpture is of Goddess Durga that dates back roughly to 7th AD (about 1300 years old). The sculpture is carved in a black stone.
As per a statement issued by Police, the sculpture is of Goddess Durga seated on a lion throne, left side of the arm is missing from the shoulder, the sculpture is having the influence of Gandhara School of Art and the right hand is holding lotus.
“A team of department of Archives, Archaeology & Museums, J&K Government were called for examination of the recovered sculpture and the said recovered sculpture was handed over to Mushtaq Ahmad Beigh Deputy Director Department of Archives, Archaeology & Museums J&K Government and his team by Tahir Saleem Khan SSP Budgam in presence of Shri Naeem Wani-JKPS Dy. SP Hqrs Budgam and other Police/Civil officers through proper handing / taking over,” the statement said.
Pertinently, a sculpture of Goddess Durga, believed to be almost 1200 year-old, was recovered by the Police in Budgam district on August 30. The statuette was later handed over to the department of Archives, Archaeology & Museums—(KNO)
