Srinagar: A major earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter Scale hit north India on Friday late evening, creating panic among the people.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey the epicenter of the earthquake was 35 km W of Murghob in Tajikistan-Xinjiang Border Region.
The earthquake was felt at 10:30 pm.
The tremors were felt in several parts of north India including Punjab, Delhi, and Jammu and Kashmir.
Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah tweeted: “Not since the earthquake of 2005 have the tremors in Srinagar been bad enough to force me out of the house. I grabbed a blanket & ran. I didn’t remember to take my phone & so was unable to tweet “earthquake” while the damn ground was shaking.”
His sister Safia Abdullah said she could not grab her phone either. “Snap! I didn’t grab my phone either,” Safia tweeted.
